Louis Wischnewsky, 22 years old, LTM, 4th semester, University of Patras

What motivated you to go abroad?

I am a very curious and open-minded person, and I simply find it really exciting to be able to study in a new country! Even before leaving, I was really looking forward to meeting many new people, building a new network of contacts and learning how to study and live in another country. In this case, it was Patras in Greece, and my expectations were completely fulfilled.

How did you choose your host university?

I came across the University of Patras through our university's Outgoing Portal and through discussions with the International Office. Of course, our university has many other partner universities around the world, but Patras really convinced me. Simply because I wanted to learn more about Greek culture and the Greek way of life and because of its beautiful location directly on the Gulf of Corinth.

What expectations or hopes did you have before leaving?

I expected to meet many friendly and inspiring people and to make good progress in my studies! I was also very interested in how student life and everyday university life, in short, the way knowledge is taught in another country, work. Looking back, I can now say that I am very satisfied with how my stay abroad turned out, and I am really happy about the new experiences I gained and the great progress I made in my studies.

How did you prepare for your stay abroad?

First of all, I naturally got in touch with our International Office and my programme coordinator. After my successful application and the joint preparation of a Learning Agreement, I also got in touch with my Erasmus coordinator in Patras and my new professors.

I briefly introduced myself to them beforehand, and this gave me a much better idea of everything that I could more or less expect.

When I arrived in Patras at the beginning of the semester, I of course met all of my professors in person again, which was really nice. The Erasmus coordinator responsible for my Tourism Department explained everything new to me in detail and then showed me the cafeteria, where I was also able to practise my first bits of Greek with the kitchen staff.

What challenges did you face, and what support did you receive?

The Greek language was a little difficult for me. Although I attended a Greek course twice a week that was offered by the University of Patras, understanding and reading signs and texts was somewhat complicated. The good thing, however, was that the Greeks always helped me, and I quickly had friends from my lectures by my side who could support me with any questions that came up.

In addition, I had to change my Learning Agreement afterwards, but that was not a problem at all, thanks to the really great support from my programme coordinator and the International Office.

Was hast du im Ausland gemacht (Studium, Praktikum, Forschungsaufenthalt, …)?

What did you do abroad (studies, internship, research stay, etc.)?

I continued my Tourism studies (LTM) in Greece for one semester through Erasmus.

How does studying there differ from studying in Germany/at HOST?

Studying as an Erasmus student in Greece is very different from studying in Germany. I often had almost one-on-one lessons with the professors, and many course requirements took the form of written assignments, discussions with professors and presentations. In some respects, this was a very efficient learning method.

Was hast du dazugelernt?

What did you learn?

One of the things I learned was what it is like to live in a new city, in a new country, in a new culture, and to make new friends there as well.

For me, this experience is completely different from travelling, for example, where you are often travelling with other people who are also travelling, and as a result you do not really immerse yourself in the life of the country you are visiting. Through the Erasmus exchange, I had the full opportunity to better understand and directly experience the lives of the Greeks. I am very grateful for my time in Patras, and I am happy to have made new Greek friends whom I would also like to visit again.

How did you experience the country, its culture and its people?

Almost all the Greeks I met were incredibly nice and helpful, and also very hospitable. There is even a word for this: the Greeks call their hospitality “Filoxenia” and they are proud of it.

I felt very comfortable, and whenever there was a question, a friend or one of the professors could help me. The Erasmus Student Network, for example, also set up a large WhatsApp group where you could ask questions to all the Erasmus students and Greek “buddies” whenever necessary. Many events, activities and excursions for Erasmus students were planned and offered this way.

Was hat dich überrascht?

What surprised you?

How much coffee Greeks drink and how often they go to cafés. Not only that, but also how long they sit in cafés. Sometimes hours can pass. You drink coffee over a really long period of time and talk. I think that is a really nice tradition, where it is best to bring a little more time than you initially thought. Just quickly having a coffee is not really the case in Greece. ;)

Was war dein prägendstes Erlebnis?

What was your most memorable experience?

A trip to Cyprus together with a group of my international friends. Patras is perfectly located for exploring the surrounding area or even other countries during long weekends and holidays. Flights can be very inexpensive.

Has your perspective on your studies or your future plans changed?

Yes, of course. I have focused my attention much more on the international orientation of my studies and my future plans. I can well imagine living in a completely new environment in the future.

What skills or perspectives are you taking back with you?

Independence, self-confidence, team spirit, new friendships and an even more global perspective on things than I had before. Especially with regard to the European region.

Would you recommend a stay abroad to other students?

Absolutely. I highly recommend using the Erasmus stay to find out more about the lives of the people who live in the country concerned, to get in contact with them and to immerse yourself in the new culture. It is easy, for example, to attend lectures in the local language, because sometimes the lectures are then held in English specifically for this reason. This way, you meet many new fellow students outside the Erasmus bubble, who can give you a completely different insight and a broader understanding of a country and its culture.

What advice would you give students who are still hesitating?

It is good to read reports like this one beforehand, do some research or, for example, watch videos to get a first idea of the host institution, the country and the city. This immediately gives you a good idea of how great the Erasmus programme is. In the end, the important thing is to get started and have confidence! Once you are there, I recommend choosing an international shared apartment.

What is your favourite anecdote that you often tell?

At the beginning of my exchange semester in Patras, I thought there were only about 15 other Erasmus students. When I first arrived, I was very surprised and really happy when I found out that there were around 180 students from all over Europe!

In addition, I hardly ever took the bus without meeting someone who wanted to know where I was from or whether I might need any advice, since I was new to the country. Really great!

Louis!

How would you describe your stay abroad in one sentence?

Fantastic new experiences, great personal development, wonderful acquaintances and connections, an incredible expansion of my worldview in terms of understanding new countries and their cultures in Europe, and above all: curiosity for more!

See you soon! Louis!
