At Stralsund University of Applied Sciences, we celebrate diversity, so we are delighted to welcome 370 international students from 49 countries. They account for 21 per cent of the student body, which is a testament to the university's international orientation. Each month, we introduce one international student, whether from South Asia, North Africa or Latin America. Why did they choose Stralsund? What advice would they give to other international students, and what do they love about their degree programme? But international mobility also works the other way around: What are our outgoing students from HOST looking for – and what do they find? Read on to find out.

Was hat dich motiviert, ins Ausland zu gehen?

Mich hat vor allem meine frühere Auslandserfahrung während des Bachelorstudiums motiviert. Damals habe ich gemerkt, wie sehr mich ein neues Umfeld persönlich wie fachlich weiterbringt. Die Mischung aus neuen Perspektiven und dem Alltag in einem fremden Land hat mir unglaublich gutgetan. Deshalb war für mich schnell klar, dass ich diese Chance im Master noch einmal nutzen möchte.

What motivated you to go abroad?

It was mainly my previous experience of studying abroad during my bachelor’s degree that motivated me. Back then, I realised just how much a new environment helps me develop both personally and academically. The combination of new perspectives and everyday life in a foreign country did me a world of good. That’s why it quickly became clear to me that I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity again during my master’s degree.

Wie hast du deine Gasthochschule / Praktikumsunternehmen ausgewählt?

Unter den für mich interessanten Gasthochschulen hat die UNISS besonders hervorgestochen, weil sie Nachhaltigkeitskurse anbietet. Da Nachhaltigkeit im Studium oft sehr theoretisch bleibt, hat mich vor allem der Schwerpunkt auf Datenerhebung angesprochen. Und natürlich hatte auch Sardinien als Studienort seinen ganz eigenen Reiz.

How did you choose your host university / internship company?

Among the host universities that interested me, UNISS stood out in particular because it offers sustainability courses. As sustainability often remains very theoretical during one’s studies, I was particularly drawn to the focus on data collection. And, of course, Sardinia as a place to study had its own unique appeal.

Welche Erwartungen oder Hoffnungen hattest du vor der Abreise?

Vor meiner Abreise hatte ich vor allem die Hoffnung, dass die Kurse inhaltlich wirklich das halten, was sie versprechen: einen praxisnahen Zugang zu Nachhaltigkeit im Tourismus. Gleichzeitig habe ich mir gewünscht, dass ich mich auf Sardinien schnell einlebe und eine gute Zeit haben würde.

What expectations or hopes did you have before you left?

Before I left, my main hope was that the courses would actually deliver on their promise in terms of content: a practical approach to sustainability in tourism. At the same time, I hoped that I would settle in quickly in Sardinia and have a good time.

Was hast du im Ausland gemacht (Studium, Praktikum, Forschungsaufenthalt, …)?

Ich habe an der UNISS Kurse zum Thema Nachhaltigkeit im Tourismus belegt, mit einem starken Fokus auf Datenerhebung.

What did you do whilst abroad (studying, an internship, a research placement, etc.)?

I took courses on sustainability in tourism at UNISS, with a strong focus on data collection.

Wie unterscheidet sich das Studium von dem in Deutschland/an der HOST?

Das Studium war insgesamt recht ähnlich: kleine Kursgruppen und eine entspannte Atmosphäre. Besonders war allerdings der Standort. Der Tourismuscampus liegt direkt im Flughafen von Olbia, was definitiv ein ungewöhnliches, aber irgendwie passendes Umfeld war.

How did the course differ from the one in Germany/at HOST?

Overall, the course was quite similar: small class sizes and a relaxed atmosphere. What made it special, however, was the location. The Tourism Campus is situated right inside Olbia Airport, which was definitely an unusual but somehow fitting setting.

Was hast du dazugelernt? Was hast du über dich selbst gelernt?

Ich habe einen viel praktischeren Blick auf Nachhaltigkeit gewonnen und habe außerdem angefangen Italienisch zu lernen, um im Alltag besser zurecht zu kommen. Gleichzeitig habe ich gemerkt, wie schnell ich mich in einer neuen Umgebung zurechtfinden kann, und wurde in meinen fachlichen Fähigkeiten bestärkt.

What have you learnt? What have you learnt about yourself?

I’ve gained a much more practical understanding of sustainability and have also started learning Italian to help me get by better in everyday life. At the same time, I’ve realised how quickly I can find my feet in a new environment, and this has boosted my confidence in my professional abilities.

Was hat dich überrascht?

Es hat mich überrascht, wie ruhig Olbia außerhalb der Hauptsaison ist. Ich hatte erwartet, dass es zumindest ein kleines studentisches Leben gibt, aber vieles spielt sich sehr lokal ab. Insgesamt waren wir nur drei Erasmus‑Studierende, was die Erfahrung sehr besonders, aber auch deutlich ruhiger gemacht hat.

What surprised you?

I was surprised by how quiet Olbia is outside the peak season. I’d expected there to be at least a bit of a student scene, but a lot of it is very much a local thing. In total, there were only three of us on the Erasmus programme, which made the experience very special, but also much quieter.

Würdest du anderen Studierenden einen Auslandsaufenthalt empfehlen?

Ich würde einen Auslandsaufenthalt während des Studiums auf jeden Fall empfehlen! Es ist unglaublich bereichernd, einmal aus dem gewohnten Umfeld herauszukommen. Für Olbia gilt allerdings: Es ist vor allem für Studierende geeignet, die sich gut selbst organisieren und sich in einem neuen Umfeld aktiv integrieren können. 

Would you recommend a study abroad experience to other students?

I would definitely recommend a study abroad experience during your degree! It’s incredibly enriching to get away from your usual surroundings for a while. However, when it comes to Olbia, it’s particularly suited to students who are good at organising themselves and can actively integrate into a new environment.

Welche Tipps würdest du Studierenden geben, die noch zögern?

Mein wichtigster Tipp: Traut euch! Ein Auslandsaufenthalt wirkt am Anfang vielleicht einschüchternd, aber die Erfahrungen, die ihr sammelt, sind es absolut wert. Man wächst unglaublich daran, sowohl fachlich als auch persönlich. 

What advice would you give to students who are still hesitating?

My top tip: just go for it! Studying abroad might seem daunting at first, but the experiences you’ll gain are absolutely worth it. You’ll grow immensely, both academically and personally.

Was hättest du gern vorher gewusst?

Ich habe schnell gemerkt, dass das Studierendenleben in Olbia deutlich ruhiger ist als an vielen anderen Partnerhochschulen. Der Hauptcampus der UNISS befindet sich in Sassari, nicht in Olbia, und dadurch war es für mich leider kaum möglich, an den Erasmus‑Events teilzunehmen. Ein großer Teil des meist typischen Erasmus‑Erlebnisses ist dadurch weggefallen. Ich hatte jedoch trotzdem eine wirklich gute Zeit und habe tolle Menschen kennengelernt, die meinen Aufenthalt sehr bereichert haben.

What would you have liked to have known beforehand?

I soon realised that student life in Olbia is much quieter than at many other partner universities. The main UNISS campus is in Sassari, not in Olbia, which unfortunately meant it was almost impossible for me to take part in Erasmus events. This meant that a large part of the typical Erasmus experience was missing. Nevertheless, I still had a really good time and met some great people who really enriched my stay.

Lieblingsanekdote, die du oft erzählst?

Dass mein Campus direkt im Flughafen lag. Es war manchmal chaotisch, aber auch irgendwie ikonisch für ein Tourismusstudium.

What’s your favourite anecdote that you often tell?

That my campus was right inside the airport. It was chaotic at times, but also somehow iconic for a tourism degree.

Wie würdest du deinen Auslandsaufenthalt in einem Satz beschreiben?

Eine ruhige, lehrreiche und überraschend authentische Erfahrung, die mich fachlich wie persönlich weitergebracht hat.

How would you describe your time abroad in one sentence?

A peaceful, educational and surprisingly authentic experience that helped me grow both professionally and personally.
