Brief description

The “Renewable Energies and e-Drives” degree programme offers you a varied course of study that prepares you for the diverse career opportunities within the growing renewable energy generation sector. It enables you to play an active part in the energy transition. The degree programme comprises six consecutive semesters and concludes in the 7th semester with a work placement in a company and the subsequent Bachelor’s thesis. From the 4th semester onwards, you can choose one of two specialisations: Electrical Energy Systems or Thermal Energy Systems.

Because it is not all just a question of technology, we also place great importance on personal development and the acquisition of fundamental social, economic, occupational and legal skills. Upon successful completion of the programme, you will be awarded the academic degree ‘Bachelor of Science’. After that, nothing will stand in the way of your career in the field of renewable and conventional energy technology! Would you prefer to continue with research? No problem! Alternatively, you can successfully continue your studies on a Master’s programme, either nationally or internationally.

Outlooks

Aims and career prospects

The 7-semester Bachelor’s degree programme in Renewable Energy and e-Drives prepares you for a wide range of career paths within the growing sector of renewable energy generation and utilisation. To this end, you will take an interdisciplinary approach to the scientific and technical aspects of this future-oriented technology, whilst taking economic and environmental considerations into account. Through specialised training in two areas of specialisation and a strong practical focus, you will be equipped to work independently. You will quickly familiarise yourself with the broad spectrum of renewable energy technologies and systems, as well as their integration into energy supply networks. You will also explore new areas of the energy transition. As a graduate, you will thus be able to respond flexibly to the constantly evolving practical demands and enter the rapidly growing market for future energy sources straight away.

Job profiles

Engineers specialising in renewable energy and electric drives have access to a very broad range of career opportunities, both in large companies and in medium-sized industrial firms, as well as with service providers, for example in the following areas:

  • Design, planning and implementation of renewable energy systems and their components
  • Energy storage and grid integration
  • Project management for new installations and modernisation
  • Commissioning and operation of renewable and conventional energy plants
  • Consultancy and sales, acting as a consultant on matters relating to future energy supply systems and concepts
  • Energy consultancy; assessment of efficiency and compliance with environmental regulations
  • Climate Protection Officer

Right next door to the real world

Where will our electricity come from in the future?

Although electricity comes out of the socket, it first has to be generated and reliably transmitted to our homes and industrial facilities. After all, we need energy – a great deal of it. The roar of engines and turbines, the whirring of machines and robots, or the beeping and clicking of our computers, mobile phones and household appliances would simply fall silent without our electricity supply. Electricity and petrol are indispensable fuels, the availability of which has become a key issue of our century. Our reserves of fossil fuels are finite. By the year 2069, for instance, oil will be the first fossil fuel to be largely depleted. Furthermore, Germany has decided to phase out nuclear energy for safety reasons. A rethink of our energy supply is therefore essential. Particular attention must be paid to the use of renewable energy sources such as solar radiation in photovoltaic and solar thermal systems, biomass, wind power and hydropower.
However, the problem we face with renewable energy is that supply fluctuates throughout the day, across the seasons and with the weather. Consequently, the sensible use and management of surplus green electricity, along with the upgrading of our electricity grids – including through the use of suitable storage systems – is of great importance for a stable and sustainable energy supply. The use of hydrogen as a clean fuel and storage medium, and the reconversion of stored chemical energy into electricity using fuel cells, could be key to achieving this. Fuel cells, as highly efficient sources of electricity, are now found not only in German submarines but also in mass-produced cars such as the Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Tucson, each of which has just exceeded the 1,000-unit annual production mark. In future, our vehicles must also be ‘green’.

Our students, too, are working on a fuel-cell racing car with great success. They took first place at the Shell Eco-Marathon Europe in London in 2017, thereby becoming European champions.
We would be delighted if you too would join us in tackling these exciting challenges posed by the energy transition and, as a future engineer specialising in renewable energy, help shape the ‘green future’.
