Software Development and Artificial Intelligence

Bachelor’s degree programme

On the Software Development and Artificial Intelligence degree programme, you will learn how AI works. It’s not just about applying it; you’ll also take a look ‘under the bonnet’ of AI to understand how it works and how it can be developed. You’ll also learn how large-scale software systems can be designed, developed and maintained. Traditional programming is just one part of this, albeit an important one. Together, your knowledge of AI and software systems will enable you to play a part in the digital transformation and bring AI to end-users. Striking a balance between the fields of artificial intelligence and software development lies at the heart of the degree programme – and you can choose your own specialisation.

Brief description

Computers are all around us – not just in our hands, on our desks or in data centres. We carry them in our ears, on our wrists and sometimes even inside our bodies. We drive with them in our cars and use them to plan our route to our destination; we even let them take the wheel. They recommend products, restaurants and music to us, and draw up our exercise plans to help us stay fit. And if we do fall ill, they assist with diagnosis and treatment, because they never get tired and have seen millions of patients.

For all this to work, we need modern methods of artificial intelligence, which are now being used in more and more products and are constantly evolving. Understanding these methods and implementing them in computer programmes are the two main focuses of the “Software Development and Artificial Intelligence (SKIB) degree programme”.

To find your way into modern computer science, you’ll first head to the ‘charging station’ and learn about, for example, programming techniques, databases, operating systems or statistics. You’ll also get hands-on with the hardware on which computer programmes run and examine it closely.

After that, you can set off and explore the wider field. In the area of artificial intelligence, you’ll encounter applications of neural networks and machine learning algorithms, for example for recognising objects in images, understanding natural language or even creating works of art. In the field of software development, you’ll learn methods for developing complex applications, for example for the web or small, connected devices in the Internet of Things.

You have the flexibility to decide how far you wish to go in each direction and where to place your focus. Through a range of projects, you’ll combine your skills in software development and artificial intelligence to develop creative solutions – the only limits being your imagination and – admittedly – the laws of nature.

Outlooks

Aims and career prospects

Through the Bachelor’s degree programme in ‘Software Development and Artificial Intelligence (SKIB)’, we equip you, on the one hand, to play a responsible role in the planning,  development, configuration and implementation of complex software systems in companies and in the processing of multimedia data, whilst also enabling you to develop, use and apply artificial intelligence systems.

The Bachelor’s programme prepares you directly for a career or serves as a foundation for a Master’s degree.

Job profiles

As a graduate of our Software Development and Artificial Intelligence degree programme, you will have excellent career prospects. This is because software and artificial intelligence development are in demand in almost every sector. Typical examples include: medicine and biotechnology, automotive engineering, speech processing and synthesis, environmental technology, home automation, building services engineering, retail, banking, insurance, communications networks and data analysis. Of course, research at universities and in companies is also an attractive career path:

  • Planning and developing client software as an employee of a software house
  • Planning and developing data analysis tools as an employee of a company in the service sector
  • Developing hardware and software systems for a device manufacturer or through your own engineering consultancy
  • Developing AI and data analysis systems for a management consultancy.
  • Advising on the selection and configuration of software systems as a consultant for a management consultancy
  • Basic research in the field of AI at large companies, universities or research institutions
  • Planning, development and administration of hardware, software, AI and data analysis within a company

Right next door to the real world

Stralsund University of Applied Sciences is a young institution with a relatively young teaching staff and excellent technical facilities. The university has more than 30 years’ experience in computer science. Word has long since spread amongst companies that Stralsund produces well-qualified graduates. Many students work for a local company whilst still studying. Some of these companies have even opened a branch in Stralsund specifically to maintain close links with students and graduates.

Academic activities are driven forward, amongst other things, by the Institute for Applied Computer Science (IACS) with its PhD students and professors.

Thanks to the well-rounded, cutting-edge training offered by the Software Development and Artificial Intelligence (SKIB) degree programme, our graduates have every opportunity to fulfil their potential across a wide range of industries. And the flexible choice of specialisation allows plenty of freedom to pursue one’s own interests whilst still studying.

Course structure

Our modern degree programme offers you plenty of variety, with two specialisations: software development and artificial intelligence.

It comprises six consecutive academic semesters and a work placement semester. The programme concludes with the academic degree of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). You can then proceed to a Master’s programme either immediately or after gaining some professional experience.

From the 6th semester onwards, you can choose one of the two specialisations: Software Development or Artificial Intelligence. The tables show the structure of the programme:
