From Visiting to Selling the Nordic Countries

Hei Hei! I completed a six-month voluntary internship at Haman Travel AS, the largest Scandinavian tour operator based in Oslo, Norway. My role focused on B2B clients, with a special responsibility for the DACH market.

Application and Preparations

Towards the end of my bachelor’s studies, I came across the Haman Group online webpage and applied for an traineeship. Since the internship could only start the following semester, I decided to begin my master’s studies in the meantime. I was aware that this would require a break in my master’s program, but the practical experience I would gain during the internship was definitely worth it.
I was placed with the colleagues at Haman Travel in the FIT Department, and after submitting my application documents and attending an interview, I finally received the internship contract.

With this contract, I was then able to apply for an Erasmus scholarship through the International Office. As during my bachelor’s studies, the team was always very supportive and helped me with all my questions. After that, I started around September/October to prepare for the arrival, accommodation etc. In Oslo there are some common websites to find affordable rooms in shared apartments, have a look at finn.no or hybel.no.

Internship

Haman Travel is the largest tour operator for the entire Nordic region, going from Greenland and Iceland to Scandinavia and the Baltics. With a focus on the B2B sector, this was my first experience working with agencies as clients. However, since the entire Haman Group shared a big open office, it was also very interesting to observe the B2C and group departments with their work.

Haman Travel FIT is based in Oslo, so I went to the office every day and had my own workspace. In the beginning, there were many new systems to get used to, but after about a month, I found my rhythm.

Together with two other colleagues, we were responsible for the DACH market. We divided tasks among ourselves, deciding who handled which clients and offers. Since nearly every travel inquiry involved different destinations, countries, and activities, the work was very varied, and we rarely sold the same trips twice.

The entire office is very open and approachable, and with quick contacts to employees and fellow interns, it was easy to fit in. Also, the work atmosphere in the Nordic countries is a bit more relaxed compared to, for example, Germany. Among other advantages, we had free access to a gym at the office and public transportation costs were covered by the company. But of course, this position was still an internship, and you don’t receive all benefits as the employees do (unfortunately).

Culture and time off

Norwegians are quite cut off and in general it was hard to get to know Norwegians, as also the office were mostly international employees. However, Oslo is an amazing city for living. If you like the outdoors, the city is a perfect destination. With a tram ride to the ski slopes or just taking a bath at the most beautiful islands of Oslo – you can choose. I could really feel the differences from January/ February and June/July, the city was crowed, everywhere was music and people were enjoying the long summer nights in the parks. I would recommend experiencing both seasons, even though the midnight sun and the summer were more exciting to me. However, be aware of that Norway in general is expensive. Make yourself a plan before about your salary, rent and other expenses and then you are good to go.

With good connections to Norwegian roommates, other interns or international students, I really had the chance of exploring the country and especially the region around Oslo. Definitely the highlights of Norway are the destinations above the arctic circle and the fjords. Especially through the internship, you gain a lot of knowledge, and it was easy to decide what parts of Norway are worth to explore the most.

Conclusion

My time in Oslo comes to an end but Oslo will definitely stay in my heart. I would say, one of the most liveable destinations I have ever been to. The internship itself gave me a lot of insights, and I am happy to experience the tasks working at a tour operator. I definitely enjoyed my time working for Haman Travel and am thankful for all the knowledge I got taught.

Thanks to the Erasmus scholarship I could really enjoy my time in Oslo and would definitely recommend everyone else to use the chance of the support.
