In September 2026, Stralsund University of Applied Sciences will host the European Conference on Data Analysis (ECDA 2026). The international conference is being organised by Prof. Dr Gero Szepannek from the Faculty of Economics. “Dealing with data is becoming increasingly important, as current developments in the field of AI demonstrate,” explains Prof. Szepannek.
The ECDA is one of the leading European conferences in the field of data analysis and brings together researchers from statistics, computer science and applied disciplines. The focus is on current methodological developments and their application in a wide range of data science fields.
There is considerable interest in the conference: a total of 105 abstracts have been submitted from 17 countries. The scientific programme is set to comprise around 30 topic-specific sessions, taking place across five parallel tracks. This will be complemented by six keynote lectures and a panel discussion organised by the Society for Data Science itself.
The largest delegation of participants comes from Germany, whilst other attendees are travelling from countries including Poland, Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Canada, Finland, France, Ireland, Japan, Austria, South Africa, Switzerland and even the United Arab Emirates.
The European Conference on Data Analysis focuses on the analytical foundations of data science and covers a broad spectrum of current research topics. These include, amongst others, methods for the explainability of artificial intelligence, data visualisation, cluster analysis, Bayesian methods, neural networks, large language models and text mining, as well as applications in marketing, healthcare, the social sciences, econometrics and risk modelling.
“I am looking forward to exchanging ideas with researchers from many different countries,” said Prof. Dr Szepannek, “and the conference also offers our students a great opportunity to experience the latest developments in cutting-edge research at first hand. I see the awarding of the ECDA – which has previously been hosted exclusively by universities – to HOST as recognition of the excellent research work being carried out here at the university.”
