Recognition of ECTS credits
ECTS is the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System. It was developed by the European Union to enable a common approach that guarantees the academic recognition of academic achievements abroad.
The ECTS rules regarding information on the subjects offered, the agreement (between the home and host universities) and the awarding of credit points (credits for short), which reflect the student's workload, have been defined in such a way as to strengthen mutual faith and trust.
ECTS credits are a value awarded to modules or seminars and describe the student's workload required to complete these modules. They reflect the amount of work each subject requires in comparison to the total work required to complete a full year of study at the institution, including lectures, seminars, self-study - in the library and at home - as well as examinations and other assessments. These credits represent a relative rather than an absolute measure of the student's workload.
Thus, 60 credits correspond to the workload for an academic year and 30 credits are usually awarded for a semester and 20 credits for a trimester. Credits are only awarded if the subject has been completed and the required examinations have been successfully passed.
Procedure for the recognition of credits from abroad
Before the stay:
- Before the stay at a university abroad, the form Recognition of Examination Achievements must be completed. The subjects at Stralsund University of Applied Sciences and the host university are compared here.
- This is then discussed with the responsible professor / lecturer. The number of credits should be noted and the content of the course (module description) should be submitted.
- The professor confirms the subject-specific recognition with his or her signature, so that students have certainty for later recognition before starting their stay abroad.
- Erasmus students can then complete the form and have it signed by the responsible ECTS coordinator.
After the stay:
- After the semester or year abroad, the form for the recognition of examination results completed before the stay must be submitted to the International Office together with the English or German grade transcript from the foreign university for grade recognition.
- Grades are recognised in accordance with the valid grade conversion at Stralsund University of Applied Sciences and the principles and recommendations for the conversion of grades in the context of temporary stays abroad .
